3278 tubes in a pile.

*

This post will be meaningless to normal people, but yesterday I finished up the bulk of work that I started last August. Due to various mishaps, disasters and blatant mistakes by me I still have quite a few extra repeats and gaps to fill, but finally the monstrous pile of severed leaves and roots has disappeared.

Since August, I have labelled and processed 3278 tubes. Most of them are now sitting in our cold room in a mountain threatening to take over the world. They are filled with highly erosive acid  and are giving off gas and being generally obnoxious. I have used every single tube rack in the lab and have had to resort to intricate tube gymnastics to put tubes in one rack temporarily and then back into the old one and using any rack-like implement to stuff them into.

3278 tubes! That’s insane! I should be having some kind of celebration right now, but sadly the machine I use to analyse the tubes strips my brain of all serotonin molecules with its intolerable noise and caprices. So right now I want to die. I want to ask to go home early, but even though I am half dead I have this Puritan resistance to ever doing that. Why oh why?

Anyway, it would be nice to think that this mammoth slog of work that nearly led to my mental demise and a total meltdown last year will yield useful data, but it is not looking that way. It is looking like a big fat nothing special to me.

I hate Science. Although, as a technician, it is my job to get the data and make it as sound and reliable as possible, whether it is interesting or useful or not. So I could theoretically take comfort from that.

Pity I feel like a dead weasel right now  – comfort is thin on the ground.

Tuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuubes. Hate em.
